Via St. James Plantation Blog
St. James Plantation is just minutes away from the charming town of Southport NC. The town has the look and feel of a New England fishing village with a pleasant atmosphere and loads of the area’s renowned Southern hospitality. This combination ensures that Southport certainly earns its distinction as one of the South’s best kept secrets. Enjoy a night out in this gorgeous town while partaking in some of the best dishes the local restaurants have to offer.
Have a Cocktail at the Olde American Fish Co.
Look out over the Intracoastal Waterway and see the Old Baldy Lighthouse on Bald Head Island, and watch fishing boats and barges pass by while enjoying a cocktail at the Olde American Fish Co.This historic piece of property was once occupied by Fraizer’s Railroad in the 1920’s and 1930’s and was used to load seafood from incoming ships. Pieces from the old railroad that existed on the property are now used in the current structure.
In the 1970’s, the property’s docks were used for a charter fishing boat business and, in the 1980’s the property was purchased by Charlie Perry and named “American Fish Co.” From 1980 until 2003 the building ran as a fully-operational fish facility where fisherman unloaded their daily catch. In 2003, the property was sold again and was developed in to what it is today: a waterfront bar with breathtaking views.
Enjoy a Meal at the Yacht Basin Provision Company
After your pre-dinner cocktail at the Olde American Fish Co., walk next door to the Provision Company and have a delicious meal while looking out over the Intracoastal Waterway. Dining at the Provision Company is quite unlike any “normal” dining experience. View a menu off a large chalkboard then order your own meals from the counter. Then, get your own drinks on the honor system and choose a table outside beneath the covered deck that overlooks the water.
The food at Provision Company is simple, yet delicious. The menu has not changed since 1993 and features favorites like steamed shrimp, a grilled tuna dinner, crab cakes, and grouper salad. The restaurant even has a mascot—a great white egret named Humphrey—who enjoys the food as much as the customers do. Each spring, Humphrey returns to the restaurant to hang out for the summer season and to enjoy his favorite dish of raw, peeled shrimp which is lovingly provided for him by the Provision Company kitchen staff.
End the Evening with Dessert at The Pharmacy
Cap off the evening with some dessert at acclaimed restaurant, The Pharmacy. Located in the heart of downtown Southport NC at 101 E. Moore Street, The Pharmacy offers fine dining and a small, yet decadent selection of desserts. Try the restaurant’s famous key lime pie or opt for a sumptuous créme brûlée or chocolate truffle torte.
