St. James Plantation residents are just minutes away from some of the Southport NC’s best art galleries! Art-lovers and artists alike will find plenty of sophisticated artwork and like-minded souls in this growing arts community. Southport, North Carolina is home to several fantastic art galleries, including the Franklin Square Gallery, Howe Outrageous Art Gallery, the Ricky Evans Gallery and Lantana’s Gallery and Fine Gifts.

The Franklin Square Gallery is home to the Associated Artists of Southport, a non-profit organization dedicated to the cultural enrichment of the community. Volunteers from the organization have run the gallery for the past thirty years.

Each year, The Oak Island Quilters organization holds their annual show inside the gallery, and local schools have student art and photography shows inside the building. Behind the main building is a pottery studio where Brunswick Community College runs its pottery classes where potters of all skill level are welcome.

The gallery highlights a local, “featured artist” from their group of artist members each month. Works of art are available for public viewing as well as for purchase.

Howe Outrageous Art Gallery

The Howe Outrageous Art Gallery is located in downtown Southport and features fine art, fine crafts, unique jewelry and other handmade goods inspired by the Cape Fear region. Thinking of dabbling in the arts yourself? Howe Outrageous also offers art classes. Students are guided step-by-step through such skills as painting, collage, photography, mosaic, and jewelry-making. The space is also available for rent for your next party, birthday or girls’ night out event!

The Ricky Evans Gallery

The Ricky Evans Gallery showcases fine art, handcrafted gifts, giclee printing and custom framing services. Owner, artist and photographer, Ricky Evans, began his career with his North Carolina Lighthouse Collection in the 1980’s. He specializes in artwork that highlights the beauty of the North Carolina coast. The gallery features not only the work of Evans, but also prints, glass art, pottery and jewelry from a wide range of local and regional artists.

St. James Plantation residents can find an eclectic mix of local arts, crafts and jewelry at Lantana’s Gallery and Fine Gifts, also located in the heart of downtown Southport. The gallery shows work from more than 50 local, regional and national artists. View works of art on canvas or wood, woodwork, metal work, fiber art, collage, and ceramics.

First Friday Gallery Walks

In the tradition of the highly popular Wilmington Fourth Friday Gallery Nights, Southport has its own gallery night called First Friday Gallery Walks. The night is as much about viewing artwork as it is for local residents to get out and socialize with fellow art-lovers and supporters of local businesses and culture. Franklin Square Gallery, Howe Outrageous Gallery, the Ricky Evans Gallery and Lantana’s Gallery and Fine Gifts all participate in the Walk which takes place every first Friday of the month from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.
