Discover the Best Audubon-Certified Communities
In an Audubon-certified community, residents can be confident that their community has been designed to protect the natural environment and promote long-term sustainability. If you’re thinking about relocation or retirement in the near future, check out the greener lifestyle choices in an Audubon-certified community.
What is an Audubon-certified community?
Audubon International is a worldwide organization that works with master planned communities to create and maintain living environments that are healthy for both people and nature. Residential developments can apply to Audubon International’s Sustainable Communities Program and earn their certification after a detailed environmental-quality review. Residential and resort communities with golf clubs can also apply for and be awarded a separate certification in the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program for Golf Courses.
What are the benefits of living in an Audubon-certified community?
- Community planning. Audubon International staff members work with developers to design master plans that protect environmentally sensitive areas like wetlands, old-growth forests and bird-nesting areas. The goal is to create a plan that balances development and conservation to the advantage of future residents and the natural environment alike.
- Wildlife-habitat protection. One clear benefit to residents in an Audubon-certified community is the preservation of wildlife habitat in designated nature preserves, community parks and open spaces. Community walking and biking trails are often included in these areas so that residents can enjoy them with little impact on native plants and animals.
- Quality of life. Audubon-certified community residents experience a higher quality of life in a number of ways: Neighborhood tree protection creates shade and reduces energy costs. Recreational activities like bird-watching and fishing are enhanced with the conservation of natural woodlands, meadows, ponds, and streams. Community involvement in maintaining and expanding protected areas is a positive social activity for residents that also strengthens community identity. Fresher air, cleaner water, greener land, and more wildlife can all contribute to a better quality of residential life.
- Community sustainability. Audubon International certification programs promote the long-term sustainability of residential and retirement communities. Preservation of the environment, conservation of natural and cultural resources, and promotion of renewable-energy systems are parts of that process. But the Audubon International Sustainable Community Program also looks at factors like public health, recreation, safety and emergency management to enhance community quality that can be sustained for the long term. And Audubon-program communities must renew their certification every two years to show that they're continuing to live up to those high standards

Callawassie Island, located in the heart of the Lowcountry, is a private, gated island community offering world-class Tom Fazio golf and a full complement of amenities including a tennis center, clubhouse, pools, fitness center, and River Club. Secluded from the noise and congestion of the highway, Callawassie lies miles from Hilton Head and is also convenient to Beaufort and Bluffton (15 minutes away); historic Savannah, GA (a 30-minute drive); and the Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport (40 minutes away). A half-mile causeway provides a relaxing, slow-paced approach to the island, where peace and quiet are as plentiful as vibrant activity.
The community hosts numerous social events, activities and clubs connecting members by their passions for nature, art and giving back locally. Members take full advantage of the island parks, historical sites and recreation areas for enjoying remarkable views of undisturbed nature. Island dwellers have access to four community docks providing leased slips, kayak launches and excellent opportunities for fishing, crabbing and shrimping. The River Club, overlooking the Colleton River, is a warm gathering center with a library and fireplace, family swimming pool, and offers seasonal dining.
For those seeking a golfing experience like no other, the 27-hole, Tom Fazio-designed championship golf course is truly spectacular. Voted one of South Carolina’s top 50 courses, Callawassie recently enhanced the design with a four-million-dollar renovation in 2014. This renovation resulted in a brand-new pro shop with three Class A PGA Golf Professionals. The courses meander intimately along the waterways and salt marshes in a way that environmental regulations have made difficult for newer courses; visual interest is natural not manmade.
Callawassie Island is the first South Carolina gated community to have been designated a “Community Wildlife Habitat” by the National Wildlife Federation. This coexistence brings a true community balance with nature. The island is covered with live oaks and palmettos, egrets and herons, and encompasses a thriving salt marsh ecosystem.
Today, Callawassie is one of only four South Carolina communities holding this distinguished designation. The homes and homesites, including waterfront property, are among the best values in the area.
There is a place off the South Carolina coast, near the charming town of Beaufort, where nature and luxury share center stage. Shaped by the Intracoastal Waterway and a rich Southern history, the SC gated golf community of Dataw Island is a pristine parcel of 870 acres waiting to be discovered.
The Dataw Island Club is the perfect choice for you. Golf and Social memberships are available for island residents. If you live in the area and are interested in joining the club, call to find out about the special Country Club Membership incentives. For membership information call (843) 838-3838. Ask about their vacation memberships!
The Dataw Island Club has completed its two year renovation of their golf courses. The Cotton Dike course, designed by Tom Fazio, was completely renovated in 2011, and the Arthur Hills designed Morgan River course has also completed its renovation.

Welcome home to Wycliffe.
Wycliffe Golf & Country Club in Wellington, FL unveiled its $18.2 million dollar renovation project to the membership in November 2019, showcasing the new contemporary spaces like “The Cliffe” (bar and lobby lounge) and “Flavours” (fine dining restaurant) receiving rave reviews from both members and their guests. Surprisingly, the project was completed ahead of schedule and under budget!
Not only was the Club’s food & beverage programming improved by the addition of the aforementioned spaces, but with a phased approach, a refreshed spa & fitness center, ballroom, driving range & short game area as well as an outdoor event pavilion, were all revealed earlier in the year.
The recently renovated Driving Range and Short Game area provide the members a practice facility second to none. The driving range features a 45,000 sq. ft. range tee, covershots canopy, and multiple target greens with bunkers to simulate shots players may encounter on the course. The short game area features two greens surrounded by bunkers where a player can hit any shot imaginable inside of 60 yards. The short game area covers 1.25 acres. These two areas make Wycliffe standout for those players interested in lowering their scores.
Because of the health of the project and a prudent approach to project management expenses, there was a great deal of added value included in the finished product. The Club added a new roof to the almost 100,000 sq. ft. building, major HVAC upgrades, and a beautiful water feature in the lobby – all of which were not in the original plan.
But that’s not all that was completed throughout the construction journey. While under construction for those 18 months, Wycliffe successfully merged with its homeowner’s association, resulting in $1M in efficiencies annually, as well as a streamlined and simplified governance structure. They were also able to complete a thorough branding study to differentiate themselves in the market and highlight who they are, with brand-new contemporary facilities and programming.
“Our great team of community volunteers partnered with professionals to give us a new look that exceeded our expectations. We’re celebrating 30 years with a fresh contemporary club that fits our vibrant lifestyle,” said Susan Brenner, President of Wycliffe’s Board of Directors.
As a mandatory membership community, home ownership is the key to living the Wycliffe way. Single-family homes (most with a golf cart garage to accommodate the preferred method of transportation), villas and condo residences are spread throughout 14 uniquely charming neighborhoods. Wycliffe is a real community, an enclave of friends, neighbors and partners ready to welcome you to share in this luxurious, leisurely lifestyle. Your best friends are here, even if you haven’t met them
For more information about how you can make Wycliffe your home, please call 561-964-9200 or visit wycliffecc.com.
