Summer is in full swing, the kids are out of school and the grandkids are heading to St. James Plantation in sunny Southport, NC! find the Best Places To Explore here!. Here are the 4 best places to explore in southeastern NC for some family-friendly, kid-fun this summer!
The Oak Island Lighthouse
The Oak Island Lighthouse is the brightest lighthouse in the United States! It is located on Caswell Beach and overlooks the Cape Fear River Shipping Channel and historic Southport, NC. Seasonal tours are free and you can tour the lighthouse on Wednesdays or Saturdays from 10am – 2pm all summer long. Children must be at least 7 years of age to participate in the tour. With at least 2 weeks advanced notice, patrons can request a tour to the observation deck as well! For more information visit www.oakislandlighthouse.org.
Ferry to Fort Fisher and the Fort Fisher Aquarium
A fantastic way to spend your morning or afternoon with all the kids and family is to take the Southport Ferry to Fort Fisher, pack a picnic and tour the Aquarium. The Southport Ferry leaves every 45 minutes to and from both ports all day, every day and it’s just $5 for a carload of folks! Once at Fort Fisher, plan on enjoying a picnic under the trees in the State Park or exploring the pristine, rocky shoreline. Then, take a few hours to tour the N.C. Aquarium. The aquarium is open 9am – 5pm daily and explore the Moray Eel Cave, the Open Oceans Gallery, Exotic Aquatics and the Cape Fear Shoals plus so much more. Mini Golf
A favorite pastime, Oak Island offers two fun mini golf courses: Mulligan Lagoon and Oak Island Jungle Golf, and this is a great way to spend the evening or early morning with the kids, before it gets too hot!
On the Beach
If you just want to kick back and relax on our southeastern NC beaches, you can still offer your little ones a few inexpensive, though timeless, activities. Go fly a kite! You can pick one up at any of the beach shops that line the streets of Oak Island. Throw a Frisbee or play a game of Bocce Ball. Or, have a shell-hunt seeing who can find the most unbroken shells in a given amount of time. It’s also fun to walk up and down the beach stopping in at the pier – only $0.50 to walk the Oak Island Pier and free for kids 10 and under!
