The Oyster Reef Project: Cleaning Our Waterways & Teaching Local Students

The coastal community of St. James Plantation, near Southport NC, borders the beautiful Intracoastal Waterway where marsh creeks twist and weave through the 6,000 acre neighborhood. Residents here want a better environment – one rich with life: fish and oysters, crabs and birds, even fishermen!

To achieve that, an army of resident volunteers partnered up with The NC Coastal Federation, University of North Carolina – Wilmington (UNCW)and the Division of Marine Fisheries to build reefs….out of oyster shells!

Introducing The Oyster Reef Project — oysters aren’t just for dinner anymore! Just wait until you see how these wonderful creatures have helped clean our coastal waters and provide a research sanctuary for our local students.
